Or they keep Brees and draft Larry Fitz instead.

Using a first that high on a QB is basically giving up on your current guy, or at least I see it that way.

 

What's interesting is that there are so few defensive players to add to this list compared with the offensive players.

 

Certainly not on the level of Harrison.

With a lot of offensive players, especially at the skill positions, it takes some of them a couple more years to develop and sometimes the team isn't patient or already has a guy in that role.

 

Deebo is a fantastic nickname as well.

 

Brees didn't really establish himself as a decent quarterback in San Diego until after the Chargers traded for Rivers (Remember, it was the Giants who took him and sent him to San Diego in the Eli Manning deal.) Fitzgerald went third, before the Giants took Rivers at No. 4, so the choice wasn't really Rivers or Fitzgerald. It was Rivers, a third round pick in 2004 and first and fifth rounders in 2005 or Fitzgerald. Kind of an easy decision, especially because Brees hadn't lit the world on fire to that point.

 

My mistake. They got a 4 & a 5.

 

Brees was 2-9 as a starter his second season as a starter and had more interceptions than touchdowns for his career when they traded for Rivers.

Then, almost overnight he was very good, leading them to the playoffs the next season.

 

The Chargers were 2-9 in games he started, not Brees, though he certainly contributed to the losses with lousy numbers.

 

It's obvious Brees has been juicing since his arrival in New Orleans.

 

He was very good in 2004, too. Roughly as good as his first year in New Orleans (arguably better).

 

He did well enough that San Diego hit him with the franchise tag to give them another year to see what Brees could do and if they wanted to be all in with Rivers.

 

Faulk was considering holding out for a new contract, had missed practices, etc., so Colts traded him for a second- and fifth-round pick. They had the No. 4 pick in the first round thanks to a 3-13 record in Peyton's rookie season and just figured on replacing Faulk with that pick. Hard to see how the Colts could have built anything had they paid Faulk a monster deal and THEN had to pay Manning. One of those deals that you may not want to make, but you kind of have to.
