Howie Long is full of shit. Players 20 years ago were not stomping on helpless players on the ground. They just weren't.

Not exactly a picture to bolster their case. The ball has already hit Hitchens and there's no contact being made in the picture.

He played with Lyle Alzado. Bradshaw played with Joe Greene. Would argue that either one of them would have made Suh seem
    tame in comparison.

Oh BS. Players were as dirty if not dirtier years ago and NFL films has plenty of film lionizing these 'hard nose' players.

It's football, the shock that comes from some when a player crosses the line is amazing.

How about a picture of a chicken next to Jim Caldwell?

Weren't they too busy legally slapping opposing players across the head? :D

That's a fair point, but that, as you point out, it was legal. If you were a defensive lineman rushing the QB, you used the head slap. Stepping on a player as he's lying on the ground is a cheap shot in any decade.

    And done in every decade.

Head slaps and such before the whistle is completely different from stomping someone after the whistle.
This is the first time Joe Greene has ever been called a dirty player to my knowledge.

As for Alzado, the big strike against him is the steroid taint. He was a beloved player with the Broncos and a respected player with the Raiders. Seriously, think back to players such as Nitschke, Butkus, Deacon Jones, etc. They were total hard-asses, but does anyone think they were dirty? That they stomped on players on the ground after the whistle? That they dived at knees with the intent of ending careers? Suh has been caught stomping on (OK,more like "stepping on" Rodgers, but the intent was clear) two players. Raiola's stomp was the same, and he clearly dived at knees at the end of the New England game. It's not the same thing at all.
