    Wait, is Allen out?

If the Skins can keep McCloughan off the sauce, that's a great move. He put together the 49ers' entire talent base, one that carried them three years after his departure.

Apparently, Allen will be doing what he should be doing. Being the team president. Word is, it's a 4-year deal for the guy who spells his first name wrong.

Just what the 'Skins need, more layers of management.

Just what the Skins need, a real GM who can properly evaluate players.

We'll see if one guy who's been away from the game for a while can change the long-standing nature of dysfunction in that organization.

One of the dumbest franchises in the NFL.

He's been "away from the game" for like a year, while still consulting for several teams.

But yeah, you're right. They should have probably just stuck with what they've been doing. That was working great!

He hasn't really been away from the game. Seth Wickersham wrote a long story about him for ESPN mag last month -- he has been selling his scouting thoughts to a few teams and making good money at it, though not GM money.

Really the only question is if he can stay sober (or sober enough, since the story makes clear that he isn't abstaining entirely from alcohol, just the hard stuff). He'll get that defense going especially quick -- was always great at finding guys late or on the FA wire.

The powers that be have been hiring the right people for years. Guess the consistent failures are just a coincidence.
