  1. ^^^ This.

Manning will be 39 when next season kicks off.
Denver acquired him as a short term gain to make a run at a championship. They had to figure 2 years out of him was gonna be it.
I don't think the Broncos will cut him, but they have peaked with him as their starrting QB.

  2. It wasn't my team, so maybe I would have felt differently but ... Overturning the call was the stinger. If it had been called incomplete on the field that would have been fine. The fact is was declared a catch and then overturned on review soured the whole thing.

And what twice on 4th and less than 3, Dallas throws the bomb? Murray was tired?

Re: Dallas @ Green Bay incomplete call........good call.....terrible rule. They had no choice but to rule it that way.
Re: Indianapolis @ Denver muff/fumble call.......Mike Carey doing a crackerjack job of showing everyone why he's no longer an NFL Official.

They needed a TD. They were not running on fourth-and-3. Romo saw a 1-on-1 matchup of Bryant against a sub-6-foot CB and took it.

Fourth-and-two (it wasn't fourth-and-three) is rarely a running play, and is almost never a "line 'em up and mow 'em down" running play.

Last year in the season finale, Rodgers had fourth down at midfield. He threw a bomb to Cobb to win the game and a playoff spot. If you have the matchup, it's a good call.

Something interesting about the Bryant call: There was a ref right there, watching the whole process, and he called it a catch. Maybe he saw the ball move at the end, but thought he had taken a few steps and was reaching for the goal line?

I realize replay is there to overrule on-field refs, but that guy was in perfect position to see Bryant jump for the ball, squeeze it, and (depending on your interpretation) take a few steps before falling toward the end zone.

Those numbers are deceiving, as numbers can be. He only threw for 15 touchdowns in the second half of the season, five of those against the awful Raiders in the ninth game (and he actually didn't really look that good in that game, either). Ten of his interceptions happened in the second half. He had two sub-200 yard games in the second half. Obviously if he was hurt that impacted those numbers a lot, but I also think he tremendously wore down.

If he can return from this injury and play even close to a level he was playing in the first half and obviously last year sure there is no better option. I would bet he would still be a top-half QB probably regardless. You can't blame the Broncos for giving him one more shot if he wants to do it. But I also don't think you can blame the Broncos for not wanting to take the risk of a whole season like the second half of this one and deciding to start over.

FWIW, when i watched the play in real time I though it was incomplete, then in replays it looked like a completed pass and he had control carrying it into the endzone. I thought that's all you needed to do was control it carrying it to cross the line.

Way too much officiating and replays in the NFL. Teams ought to have an Asistant Coach-Legal to argue mens rea and actus reus. Each team would have 2 minutes to argue about a violation of a rule on each play.

Agreed. Too many assumptions had to be made to overturn that one.

It's nearly impossible for the naked eye to make that judgment in real time.

I don't see what's "controversial" about the call. The ball clearly touched the ground and then he bobbled it. And falling down is not a "football move."

We're assuming he wasn't lunging for the end zone.
