The intriguing question now: Has Tiger suffered enough, or should he have to wade through more shit?

If I had his money, I'd go island-hopping forever. But America loves its comeback stories.

If I had his money and were him, not only would I go around island hopping, I'd learn how to play better golf.

It's just hard to know what another person values. Maybe you'd call it a career and be satisfied living it up the rest of your days. But maybe he can't even fathom waking up without golf to play. Maybe it's not just what he does, but, for more than 30 years, it's who he is.

There is simply no reason for Tiger to EVER call a news conference and announce he's hanging it up.

As long as he feels there is some magic fix or some "Eureka!" moment out there that can be found, he can take an indefinite time searching for it. There is no roster to be made. Rankings are meaningless --- he has either an exemption or a wild card into any tournament he wishes as long as he lives.

  5. In reading his statement, I took it as though he knows his game is mess and it needs fixed. In the worst way.
But Tiger thinks it can be fixed. And in relatively short order.
    That's how I took anyway.
I'll be stunned if he - healthy - fails to tee up at Augusta or misses more than half this year's majors due his "break."

He shot 82 on one of the easier courses on tour, with no weather or other conditions to speak of.

What's going to happen if he plays Augusta? How much change can he make in six weeks?

IMO he ought to just find a reasonably tough course in Florida and play 18 a day for a couple of weeks. No range time except warmup for his back. THEN, he could start serious work. But he's lost the game completely.

Where's my bookie's number, damn it.

Tiger at Augusta. To win. Yes, all of it!

It's Woods' own assessment, not mine. He admits he's not competitive right now. Otherwise he wouldn't have stopped playing.

Arnold played the Masters until it got downright embarrassing.

Golfers who have won majors after turning 40: Nicklaus, Player, Snead, Bolt, Boros, De Vicenzo, J. Barber, O'Meara, Mickelson, Els ... and Hogan, who won three majors in one season at the age of 42.
    It ain't over yet.

His quest to surpass Jack is over. He might find enough left in the tank to win one or two more, but it's over. In 2008, it may have seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would pass Nicklaus, but he's lost six years to injury and a messy swing since then. He needs five more majors. That's a hall of fame career on its own. Only three golfers - Snead, Hogan and Nicklaus - have won five majors after the age of 35. No one's ever won that many after 40. He's not going to fix his swing and remain healthy enough to do it.
