I agree with both of you. What the hell is this place coming to?

In a move that shook the Yankees organization to its core, Bernie Williams has announced his retirement.
He hasn't played since 2006, but never signed his retirement papers so he was technically an active player still.
Oh, and of course he's getting a plaque and his number retired.

One of my favorite Yankees ever but, man, they gotta stop retiring guys' numbers. Jeter and Rivera should have theirs retired for obvious reasons, but they're the only ones who should get that honor for a long, long time. I imagine we'll see Jeter's number retired next year, Pettitte's retired in 2017, and Posada in 2018. O'Neill's probably would be, too, if he'd spent his entire career with the Yankees.

I liked Bernie alot, as a lifelong Yankee fan. I'm ok with retiring his number only because the bar has been lowered.

Posada & Pettitte get their numbers retired this year, too. If one gets it they all should.

But Billy Martin & Reggie Jackson should not have had their numbers retired.

I'm just glad the Giants held them off in the World Series. If the Royals had won they would be absolutely insufferable right now.

And you just fucking know it'll be Royals-Pirates in the World Series this year.

And you also know that will somehow confirm everything OOP has been saying about small-market disadvantage.

They're too far gone with it now, but the Yankees should have made a ring of honor like football teams instead of retiring numbers. Set a standard for retirement -- Jeter would qualify with his 3,000 hits, five championships and career Yankeedom -- and another for recognition. Guys who aren't hall of famers but mean a lot to the franchise and fans like Mattingly, Bernie, Posada, Pettitte, Reggie Jackson, Guidry would all go up in the ring of honor and their numbers remain in service. Maybe make a 10-year grace period from enshrinement before it goes back into circulation.
