Come on. Take any other sports icon who has been out of the public eye for some time, and put them in this story. You think it wouldn't be a big deal?

If Bo jackson or Herschel Walker came out as trans, do you think no one would pay any attention?

Reggie Jackson come out as transgender, no one would care because he's not on a reality show.

The Michael Jackson comparison was interesting.

I understand the comparison. But I think the difference here is that Jenner's life and his moment is seen by many as a chance to argue that he and those like him are not Michael Jackson, i.e. that this is perfectly acceptable, and not deviant or self-destructive, behavior.

Care? Absolutely. But let's not pretend the reality show had nothing to do with it. Even Dick was wondering whether or not this was a way to garner publicity for the show.

Don't get me wrong. It is a story, by all means, and if Jenner succeeds in showing that being transgendered is nothing that should be seen as special, that's all fine and good. But let t's not pretend the story would get the same coverage if Jackson had been the one coming out.

What about if Mark Spitz had come out as transgender? Another iconic Olympian, from the same era. No reality show. Think he gets a two-hour prime time special?

No, not for the show. Is the show even on any more?

    For him, personally.

And I didn't necessarily mean a conscious publicity stunt. More like a cry for attention from someone who seemingly always needs attention.

Michael Jackson was a predator, and a child molester, who was enabled by an industry that didn't want to cross a star.

I have no idea why anyone would compare him to Bruce Jenner.

I don't watch it, so I had to look it up. Yes, the show is still on.

I'm thinking he mant before that broke, when he was just considered a weirdo. Skin-lightening. Practically deformative plastic surgery choices. Sleeping in weird chambers. Buying the Elephant Man's bones. That stuff.

    Bruce Jenner?

I don't think the guy craves attention at all.

The show built around his family was not his doing. I think his ex-wife is a pretty horrible person who would seel her child to make a buck -- and who did parlay her daughter's sex tape into a reality show.

But, I think Bruce has always found the whole thing to be a bit silly, and put up with it, but doesn't seek the publicity that comes with it.

He's not a major "character" on the show. His interest seem to be golf, helicopters, and his kids.

OK. I'll take your word. I've never seen it.

Did he say he was attracted to women during the interview?

It was pretty obvious to anyone who was paying attention that Michael Jackson was a child molester.

But hey, he could sing and dance.

And, I'm still unsure what Jenner did that was comparable to the things you've mentioned about Jackson.

Yes, his family had a reality show, but he's been relatively boring. Best I can tell, when he's been involved in the storyline, it's mostly revolved around his trying to rebuild a relationship with his kids from his previous marriages.
