No more aspartame in Diet Pepsi

    1) The leading causes of death in 1900 were influenza and tuberculosis. Heart disease was much less prevalent than it is today. It's relatively meaningless to compare life expectancy from then to today to make the kinds of conclusions people want to. There are way more variables that go into life expectancy that have zero to do with the single causal effect people typically want to conclude when they start throwing around those numbers.

    2) I'm curious about your numbers. I do know that the longer you live -- the longer your life expectancy becomes. For example, a woman who makes it to 65 today can expect to live past 85. Are you sure that a person who made it to 50 in 1900 could only expect to live to 70? If so, where are you getting that from?

Actually, I didn't say that aspartame is toxic. I have simply said that it's something that is not natural that showed up in supermarkets within the last few decades when Monsanto decided to market it as Nutrasweet, and people gobble it up now without giving it much thought. I question whether it is having consequences on our health in the aggregate that we don't understand. My personal feeling about it is, "Seems dumb to fuck around with something like that."

As for toxic plants --I wouldn't eat any of those either: 1) If I know it is toxic, obviously I don't touch it. 2) If I have no clue what something might do to me--immediately or long-term--I certainly don't eat it.

But what if they have given it a lot of thought? Such as, "I really like the taste of X, Y and Z. But after careful consideration I am not comfortable with the amount of sugar and calories these substances contain. In an effort to cut my sugar and calorie intake to more healthy levels, I will ingest these substances with artificial sweetener."

Just because you may not agree with the conclusions someone draws doesn't mean they made those conclusions without a lot of thought.

It seems like every time they monkey with a soda that has sold well for decades, it doesn't end well.

I've always hated Diet Pepsi, very few people I know drink it, it seems like Diet Coke is infinitely more popular.

But over the years they've tried adding Splenda and lemon and lime to these drinks and they seem to go away pretty quickly.

The diet drinks I always liked the best was Mountain Dew and the Zero products like Coke Zero and Sprite Zero.

Yes, but many of the diseases you mentioned -- e.g., Parkinson's -- tend to be vastly more an issue for an older populace. Thus an increase in the rate (per 100,000 in the population) would be expected as a population's age skews older. That was the only reason I raised that point.

Well, the quick off-the-top-of-my-head answer is that over the past several decades there have been a number of things that were touted as perfectly safe that turned out not to be.

Thalidomide is the one that pops right into my head.

I was curious about just how much aspartame we are talking about, so I looked it up (and thought the board would be interested) ...
