And it's not goal differential, but an educated fan like yourself would know that.

I'm sure instead of plus minus you could explain Corsi and fenwick to me

If his name was Alex Johnson not Ovechkin and was was 6'2" 230 from Moose Jaw would he be considered one the the best "power forwards" to play the game?

In this day and age where nobody scores 40 let alone 50, he is monumentally underrated.

    But winners win

Minnesota may have a goaltender they can ride.

The Caps may lose the next four but the winning goal was a thing of beauty.
    Great hit by Backstrom
Great pass by Ovechkin (who is a better player than people realize)
    Great finish by Ward

Rangers were gliding into OT. Caps were trying to win the game. One of the Rangers broadcasters lit up Nash and most of the rest of them afterward. Said the Caps were clearly the better team.

Just one game. But a damn sweet game.

Agree with this whole post. ... except the great hit part. Backstrom elbowed Boyle in the back of the head. Not offering that as an excuse. The Rangers were coasting and didn't finish out regulation. But that should be a boarding penalty -- even in the playoffs that was over the line. And at the same time, the Rangers knew they had swallowed their whistles, and needed to play hard to the end. They didn't. They paid.

    A few other thoughts:

    1) Dan Boyle is a liability. Whatever offense he is supposed to bring is more than offset by how often other teams score when he is on the ice. The Ovechkin goal was an incredible shot. I also think that if Dan Girardi or Ryan McDonagh are on the ice (as they should be whenever Ovechkin is out there), they don't get exploited that way.

    2) Braden Holtby had a brilliant game. If he plays like that all series, it is not going to be a very long series.

    3) I agree with whatever the announcers said about Nash. He frustrates me. He has the skills and the size, but he has no edge to his game. Last year when he disappeared in the playoffs, it was fine, because they had so many other guys picking up. Right now, they need way more out of Nash -- and he just slowly disappeared as the playoffs were approaching. It's just frustrating when the Caps are running Ovechkin out every other shift, and he is all over the ice, and our version of that player is invisible.

To be honest, I first heard Corsi a few weeks ago and looked it up (didn't bother with fenwick). The source of info on Corsi didn't say whether PPs or PKs counted. I assume they do. (I also read that L.A. led the league in Corsi this season, for what it's worth.) Corsi seems like a better stat than plus-minus but I am not a stat-geek.
As for the fanboi charge, when I retired from my newspaper job about a year ago, I gained the right to root for a team if I want to. However, when I come on here, I try to remain somewhat objective and share what I know. It irritates me that the experts out East have little knowledge of what happens here in the West because they simply don't watch the games. I have watched the Ducks all season. They went on the road and won in Winnipeg during the height of the Jets' hot streak. They went on the road to Minnesota and won at the height of the Wild's hot streak. They won in St. Louis and Nashville. Yet the experts need to figure out something wrong with them and come up with "goal differential." One guy says it, then someone else picks it up and suddenly, it is a "thing." I like for teams to get the credit they're due instead of experts coming up with some weird stat to prove their point.

Corsi is a 5 on 5 stat and if you look at the most recent champs it is a good predictor of future success. Plus minus is virtually useless. There's always anomalies like the Kings this year who didn't make the playoffs because they were the shits in circus time and shootouts.

Yes, I realize the Rangers won. Deservedly so, they were the best team on the ice yesterday.

But in case you missed the play that was No.1 on that thing Sports Center does:

That isn't a couple of stiffs he bulldozed there. That's the best defensive pairing in hockey and he went right through them and blasted it home while falling. Incredible goal and I hope it sent a message: They may go away but it won't be easy. Last year's Caps lose that game 5-1
