Great series. Great goaltending. Worth the indigestion -- but that's cause I am a Rangers fan.

    On to my picks.

NY over Tampa in 7. The Rangers are beat up. I don't know how they carry any emotion over after what they just went through. But I am a homer and this is my homer pick.

Anaheim over Chicago in 6. I keep picking against Chicago, and Chicago keeps winning. So if you are Blackhawks fan, I am doing you a favor. I am looking forward to Getzlaf and Toews going at it.

Yeah, that was a great, great series. Just damn entertaining. Disappointing as a Caps fan, obviously, but man, that was some exciting hockey. That entire game last night was incredible. Until the goddamn end.

Mike Green is a goner. Those two stupid, stupid penalties sealed his fate, I hope.

I feel a lot more at ease this morning than I did after Game 6. I was in a true funk Monday. That was the series. Championship teams win those closeout games at home. The Caps aren't there yet. Now that I've had a night to process things, some thoughts on the team as a whole:

    1. The Rangers were the better team all series. They were better in Game 3 when I was in the building, but Holtby stole one. They were better in the first period in six of the seven games. They got the deserved result.
    2. Fuck all the history talk. The 3-1 series lead thing, at least in this series, was completely overblown, as was Ovechkin's "guarantee," which according to people who were in the room was more of a whisper than a shout. Go back to point one. The Caps were extremely fortunate to be up 3-1. This wasn't like 2010 Montreal, where Washington was the clearly superior team and ran into a hot goalie in Halak. If they would have held on for 101 more seconds on Friday night, I would have felt like they had stolen the series, and not beaten the Rangers convincingly.
    3. The Caps finished 12 or so points behind the Rangers this season. They aren't supposed to win Game 7 in MSG. They had one shot to clinch the series. The choke game was Game 6, not last night.
    4. Let Mike Green sign some ridiculous deal in Edmonton or Vancouver. Seems like that's the right landing spot for him to slide back into obscurity. Gleason was obviously a rental who is gone as well. Orlov will be healthy next year, and Nate Schmidt is a better, younger third pair option to go with him than either of those two aforementioned schmucks.
    5. This also feels different than the Hunter team because I think there's a lot of room for offensive improvement, especially with Burakovsky and Kutznetsov. Another year under their belts, along with this playoff experience, will go a long way. That's why I was so disappointed the Caps didn't sneak into the postseason last year. Would have loved for Kuznetsov to at least gotten a taste of the playoffs, just for the experience. Johansson is still a young guy as well.
    6. Someone will overpay for Jay Beagle. Joel Ward is interesting. He's old enough that no one will give him a long-term, big money deal. He seems to love D.C. Would he take a team-friendly deal to stick around a few more years?
    7. Holtby took a big step toward being an elite goaltender. Working with Mitch Korn was huge for him, as well as having a coach who was going to let him play through a rough patch or two, unlike Oates, who nearly ruined him mentally.
8 . Overall, I just get the sense this thing is trending upward. More positives than negatives to this run.
    9. Go Lightning. Sorry, I fucking hate the Rangers. :)

Signing in a Canadian market is the last thing that will move a player into obscurity.

The way Green plays he wouldn't be eaten up by the Canadian fans and media, someone will sign him for big money though.

Good point, JC. I was just thinking more in terms of us East Coasters not really having to hear much about him any more. Hardly ever see those western Canada teams on national TV.

Green was all kinds of awful in Game 7 and pretty bad all series.
