It's part of your marriage promise. It's part of my marriage promise.

I don't think it's a necessary part of the marriage promise, generally.

Kids figure things out. They pick up on a lot of shit, especially emotions. I guarantee you most kids realize a lot more about their parents than their parents would like to admit.

Where do you draw the line, Dick? Or are you personally fine with anything as long as it's legal? #seriousquestions

I don' t know where "the line" is, but I do know that an open marriage, handled in a way that third parties are not hurt by it, is perfectly morally acceptable to me.

How exactly do you make sure third parties are not hurt?

John Irving wrote one of his early novels about extra-marital shenanigans and how somebody almost always winds up hurt. You should check it out ... it's a pretty good read. The novel is The 158-Pound Marriage.

It doesn't seem inevitable to me that the couple in the open marriage are going to be home-wrecking supposedly monogamous marriages.

I don't doubt that it doesn't often work. But:

    1. I don't find it morally objectionable; and
    2. I think that under certain circumstances, for certain people, it could and does work.

What if a spouse cheats and the significant other never finds out? No one was hurt. Is that OK with you?

    I don't doubt that.

I just don't think these "certain people" should be getting married, then.

Reminds me of a woman I used to play tennis with. She told me stories of her serial cheating husband and of how he proposed marriage to her: "My accountant says we need to get married."

Those kids being theoretically harmed emotionally should just pull themselves up by their bootstraps, get a job, and start contributing to society. Why, that's how this country was built, on the backs of emotionally damaged children.
