With gay marriage decided, what will be the next big left-led social change?

Today's sandhogs are a tough, tight-knit corps, mostly of Irish and Grenadian descent. Many speak with thick accents and display flags or other signs of their native countries on their lockers or clothing. Though they often razz one another, their camaraderie is strong.

''If something happens to one of us,'' said a young Grenadian as he pulled on his slicker one morning, ''it happens to all of us.''

A wizened man adjusting a hard hat agreed. ''We all bleed red,'' he said with a thick brogue.

Some Irish sandhogs live in the Bronx neighborhood of Woodlawn, where their union has its headquarters, and many of the Grenadians live in Brooklyn neighborhoods like Flatbush.

Sandhogs are among the nation's best-paid laborers, earning as much as $100,000 per year. Many are second-and third-generation, and among those at the 10th Avenue site are several cousins and brothers.

But, seriously, who determines the CEO pay? The CEO and his/her buddies, for the most part. They all take care of each other.
