This article is from 1981 and refers to a court case from 1976. Got anything recent enough to be relevant?

So, can we admit that building trade unions were racist? Will you say that?

Will you admit that it was a problem?

Now, if we can agree that it was a problem, going back decades, would you please tell me when the problem was fixed, what was done to fix it, and what the resulting change was?

    LOL.

The New York Times made the all white membership of a single golf club into a national story. Forcing them to open their membership to an African American was a cause for them -- the rich, white liberals who run the New York Times.

Now, in the city where they are based, where they just built a brand new gleaming corporate tower, the building trades are not diversified. Does that bother the Times?

99.9% of African-Americans could never afford to join Augusta National.

The building trade jobs we're talking about are not few in number, and they are about the top paying jobs that a person without a college degree could hope to aspire to. These jobs regularly pay $75,000 to $100,000 or more.

And, they are plentiful in big cities, where many African-Americans live, and where Democrats run the show.

Now, you don't think that opening up these jobs to African-Americans might be a little more relevant to the average African-American living in New York, Philadelphia, or Chicago, than whether or not Condi Rice got a green jacket?

Instead, Blacks should wait for you to raise the minimum wage? Yeah, that's great. Keep throwing them your scraps.

You don't think that good, private sector, building trade jobs would help more African-Americans reach the middle class? Maybe more African-American families would stay together if there were good jobs available, and African-American men could afford to raise, and support a family.

But, then Negros might move into white, middle class neighborhoods, and we can't have that.

The best part of the unions defense is that it's basically the same defense that all white country clubs have used forever.

Devil wonders how many blacks have applied for these well paying union jobs. Maybe the Negros just plum don't want 'em. What to they know 'bout plumbin' and buildin' anyhow?

Why, we just don't get Negro applicants.

And, that's just what the country clubs would say. "We've never turned down an African-American application for membership."

Unsaid, of course, is that the only way you can apply for membership is to be sponsored by a current, white member. Somehow, none of them happen to ever sponsor one of their black friends -- though they all have plenty of black friends.

And, the trade unions are the same way. You can only get a union card if you're sponsored by a current white member.

An so, membership in these unions is hereditary, like a fucking Massachusetts Senate seat.

"The union construction workforce is beginning to show changes in the makeup of its workforce as well, albeit at a much slower pace for women and non-Hispanic minorities. Hispanics are the exception. According to the Construction Labor Research Council’s Craft Labor Supply Outlook, the number of Hispanics in the construction trades more than doubled from 1993 to 2003 to almost 25 percent of all construction trade workers in the U.S. That number is projected to continue to increase rapidly over the next five to 10 years. Nationally, women make up between two and eight percent of the construction workforce, depending on the specific trade or construction occupation. African Americans represent slightly more than women. Women and non-Hispanic minorities are still underrepresented compared to their representation in the population, but the industry is beginning to move in a more diverse direction and increase its numbers of women and minorities."

"The local union construction industry—building trades unions and the contractors who employ them—has been planning and implementing programs designed to reach out to all potential workers, but especially women and minorities. The industry has partnered with numerous education entities to accomplish this task: Peoria Educational Region for Employment and Career Training, Tazewell County/Area Education for Employment, Workforce Development Board/Network, Illinois Central College, Bradley University and individual trade union apprenticeship programs. Current K-12 programs include the 8th Grade Construction Career Expo, High School Work-Based Learning Program, High School Women in Construction Day, Educator Job Shadow and career fairs/presentations."

Why are neighborhoods liberal cities in the Northeast so segregated? Why are the public schools so lacking in white students?

Rich white liberals love African-Americans. they just don't want to live next to them, or have their kids go to school with them.

Maybe we should be like Finland, and the only schools should be public schools.

    Here's another one:

"The Building Pathways program in Boston, MA is just one example. The program is sponsored by the Building & Construction Trades Council of the Metropolitan District in partnership with Action for Boston Community Development, the Boston Housing Authority, the Building Trades Training Directors Association, and The Construction institute. Building Pathways is funded through grants from the US Department of Labor, Employment & Training Administration; Commonwealth Corporation; the City of Boston Neighborhood Jobs Trust; the AFL-CIO Building America Community Development Entity, and BNY Mellon.
Building Pathways is a pre-apprenticeship program designed to provide a structured opportunity for citizens in disadvantaged communities to gain access to skill craft apprenticeship training."

Um, no, you're saying that nothing is being done to boost diversity. I'm pointing out that there are things being done.
