    By your logic on second reference you would say "Stanford took their their first lead of the day ... "

    I would hope not.

    Of course not. Stanford is a singular institution in either case. Technically, "Heat is" would be grammatically correct. Though some papers' styles treat it as a plural team, as my paper does and as mentioned in the initial mention of it on this thread. The competing paper does the opposite. It's frustrating, but that's what the bosses say.

    In the case of the Thunder, "is" is the Oklahoman's actual style. Which I hate too.

    Not arguing. Papers are free to do what they want. I just figure you can't lose if you follow the simple rule that a singular is always a singular and a plural is always a plural.

    Hard to argue, and we used to get our fair share of calls and letters when folks did such things as complain to the paper. English teachers can be snotty!
