I imagine if McConaughey hadn't nailed his lines last year people would have said the writing sucked then as well.

Yeah, him and Woody went a long way with me. Their car rides helped inject some levity here and there. After the first season, the writer felt he didn't get enough credit for the show's success, and the director at the movie shoot in season two was seen as a "take that" at the first season director. However, it's pretty clear that he needs that sort of filter on his work.

That being said, it seems weird if episode four was the breaking point for some. The last 10 minutes was a "holy shit" sequence for me, similar to the long tracking shot from the first season.

That shootout scene had some questionable elements.
For starters, why did the police have such weak weaponry? They know they're taking on gangsters who probably have guns like AK47s, and the police had nothing but handguns, and not even so much as a sniper rifle?
Plus, I find it hard to believe the police wouldn't have called off that raid/likely shootout when there was a public protest nearby.
Lastly, it's especially ridiculous that Farrell walked away from that shootout without so much as a scratch, considering, at one point, he faced 3 rounds of machine gun fire -- from like 15 feet away from him -- by half ducking behind the front end of a police squad car. He would've at least taken a bullet to the shoulder there.
That scene was still fairly entertaining, I guess.

They have not solved shit yet.

If anything, this has to solved now and not swept up in some state review because of the TV crews that were there. This has turned into a steaming pile of shit for all involved, and if anything you are going to see all these different branches of the government (city, state, hwy patrol) and the crime lord all start devouring each other. Sure, that might be boring, but this is not over. Now, do I care? Meh. I'll finish it. It's summer.

I don't think this season's script is as strong as last's, obviously, but you also don't have the great one...

I think those guys were tipped off that they were coming.

The theory I've seen is that Farrell's partner (who also played Dan Dority in "Deadwood" and Warren in "There's Something About Mary") set them up.

Yeah - I took it to be an ambush. It was also the sleazy, lazy cop who got the "tip," and he was also conveniently plugged in the head during the shootout.

It's a good thing this is only an eight-episode season, because I would punt if it was any longer. I still can't quite figure out what the hell the whole point of this season is supposed to be. Vince Vaughn is laughable as a "gangster," (and for fuck's sake don't call him that) ... I'll watch the last two eps because it's shot pretty well and I like Rachel McAdams.

Rachel McAdams is by far the best part of this season.

How can Frank afford to pay Velcoro a salary that made it worth quitting the police force?
