You can't say never with a not guilty by reason of insanity. Unlikely? Sure. But not never.

Right, right. That's why I followed up with the anecdote about the woman I met who did walk out. The Holmes case is such a high-profile one, though, it's tough to see him leaving an institution, ever.

It'll be interesting some day when mental health treatment, if this is the case, is improved compared to now. What if someone like Holmes becomes very curable?

If he is found not guilty by reason of insanity, there will certainly be a lot of public opposition to his release, but any decision should be free of influence by public opinion. Idealistic, I know.

The article I linked was about a killing that was pretty notorious at its time. Few reach the level of notoriety of the theater shooting, so I can't say it's the same, but there was real public outcry when that guy was released.

Still reading the verdicts, but so far it's guilty on all counts.

I thought I read somewhere that it was an all or nothing thing on the verdicts. If he was guilty on one count, he's guilty on them all. So it's a formality to read them all.

    Death sentence to this fucker.

If it's a crime to yell fire in a theater, it sure as hell is to go in and shoot one up, and with the weapons involved. That was sure as hell premeditated.

Glad to see Colorado get something right. With the legacy of Columbine, I expected them to do the right thing.

Fuck this Hinckley insanity defense stuff. Hinckley should have gotten far worse, and I wish Reagan had been allowed to kick him in the balls repeatedly. If not for himself, but for the damage done to James Brady and the other victims. Hell, get Jodie to kick him in the balls too. That would have been a worse punishment and really mindfucked him.

I'm surprised they didn't haul Hinckley back in for murder after Brady died.

There are lots of cases where a person dies as a result of their wounds decades later and the shooter is retried for murder, often after serving their original sentence for the shooting.

If James Holmes isn't insane, then they need to just retire the verdict.

I don't care about the ball kicking shit, I just want these fuckers snuffed off the earth.

Don't even give the impression we're devoting much thought to it. Slip in the needle and nighty night.

The right and just verdict. I watched most of this every day -- and the full closings on Tuesday. This was a slam dunk not-insane verdict. The fact it only took 13 hours of deliberations after hours of testimony was only because there were more than 250 of verdict forms to get through. Jurors seen passing a box of tissues in the box as the verdicts were read over one hour.

    Nah.

    Our system is utterly fucked.

A bunch of lawyers have a contest in which they are assigned to a side. A sick man's life or death is determined by a glorified high school debate team exercise.
