Without delving into the macro/micro economics of the wage hikes, I'll share my experience as a consumer: I stopped eating at McDonalds. It was for multiple reasons, but the main one was that their service, regardless of the location of the store or who the franchisee was, was lousy. Wendy's and Burger King's burgers are better, but their service really isn't. Maybe the wage hike results in higher-quality employees who provide better service. I'm skeptical about the prospect of that being the case.

As a consequence of this decision, generally I don't eat hamburgers any more unless I grill them myself. I found I like mine better than I like theirs.

So the price point had nothing to do with my decision to forego fast-food burgers. If I want/need fast food, I'll pay more and go to either Chick-fil-A or Zaxby's.

One of my mother's close friends grew up in Germany, and this friend's accent is such that she really doesn't say "Zaxby's" so much as she says "Sexby's." I'm really curious about the value meal there.

My wife said she is in the $14-$16 range. She's salary. So what she actually gets per actual work hour per week fluctuates depending on how much overtime she works.

I think she would be eligible for the raise to $50K thing as a manager. She wondered about "shift leaders" and if they're considered managers. If so, some folks would be getting much bigger paydays. That being said, if both assistant managers (my wife is one) and shift leaders (they have several management responsibilities but are under GM/manager/assistant manager in the food chain are now getting $50 K, what do the others (GM/manager/assistant manager) get bumped to?

My wife said if the minimum goes to $15 and she doesn't get a sizable raise, she wants to drop to a regular employee and move to a closer store (veteran employees get quite a bit of leeway in that regard, but managers don't because of their expertise). For example, my wife is good at managing food costs and where she got sent to this year (started Jan. 2) struggled with food costs in 2014. Whichever local store struggles in food cost in 2015 is where she'll be in 2016 (and could be a store she's already been at). However, if she's NOT going to be paid much more than entry-level, she would give up being manager (although she'll be getting some sort of raise, because she's not consistently at $15 per hour and not eligible for OT as an assistant manager) because the extra buck or two per hour would NOT justify the travel, inconsistent hours, inconsistent schedule and stress she currently has (but several dollars above entry level).

Makes sense but you cannot force the multinationals to not pass the buck and take the hit themselves. They will make what they want to make. We're sort of out of the natural supply and demand when you can manufacture those figures and twist them to suit your purposes.

Let's get rid of the minimum wage and let the market decide.
