Slut shaming in the Buffalo News?

I understand that that's the rhetoric that the advocacy movement has succeeded in getting a lot of people to internalize, and I understand that there are certainly men who would take that kind of calculated risk. But it doesn't account for the sheer number of sexual assaults that allegedly occur. I cannot believe that, facing the dire consequences of a conviction, that many men would force themselves onto and into a woman they know and have some kind of relationship with while the woman actively says "no."

Somehow, they have to be justifying to themselves why this is not a rape, when, in fact, it is.

I don't think that the men are innocent. That's not what I'm saying.

I'm saying that men don't know what rape is.

If the numbers are as high as research indicates they are, and you accept my premise that they should not be that high given the cost-benefit for the men, then the conclusion has to be: We are doing a poor job, as a society, educating men about what rape is.

Many men who are likely intoxicated and not use to hearing no, especially if they have started fooling around.

    Right. That's precisely it.

"She'll change her mind once we get going."

I wonder what percentage of rapes occur between people who have had sex together prior. I bet it's pretty high.

In Kane's case, according to the rumor mill, the woman had dated professional athletes in Buffalo before. It's possible she was fairly well-known. Drunk Patrick Kane thinks: "This isn't a big deal to her. It's what she does."

Or, a lot of men are misogynistic douchebags who don't care.

Why would I believe rapists have a more finely tuned moral compass than any other criminal?

Because other criminals try to hide their crime. They try to obscure their identities. They exhibit behavior that clearly indicates they know that they are liable for a crime if caught. And that's as against strangers.

Yeah, I can't think of any rapists who have ever done those things.

I said I'm not interested in those rapes. Those I understand.

We can approach this one of two ways.

Your way: Rapists are bad. And scene.

My way: Why is this happening? How do we fix it?
