Supreme Court rules in favor of gay marriage

Good thing, too. Odds of the legislature in Kentucky (or any other Southern state) voting to change its legal definition of marriage is 0.0 percent.

Total non-starter, especially in an election year.

Yeah, I understand that the law is invalid, but laws also detail how things are to be handled.

Bureaucrats, like silly County Clerks, should be able to look to the written laws of their own state in order to follow procedure.

And, again, I'm not saying this as some sort of excuse for Davis, or saying her actions are valid in the meantime, but I do believe that, especially with something as big as this, the written law should reflect the court ruling.

I understand what you're saying, but in the meantime, I think, for $80 grand a year, it's not unreasonable to expect the silly County Clerk to keep abreast of Supreme Court decisions that might impact her job.

Why is Huckabee considered a voice of for the religious right? He can't even muster more than 3 percent among Republican primary voters, which some here would think is dominated the Christian fundamentalists.

    Eh, who says he is?

I guess Davis and her family embraced him, so it's reasonable to go to him for a comment, but it's not like he has some big following.

There's also not a lot of prominent/smart people making this argument, so if you want to hear it, that's where you go.

As a coincidence, I lived in Morehead, Ky., for four years.

The only revelation I've gotten out of this whole situation is that the county is "Rowan" and not "Round" as I remembered when I left the state as a second-grader.

And, because my opinion is already pretty well set on just about everything else, I'm left with one big question: Why the heck is county clerk an elected position?

I know I vote for a clerk when the election is due. But, in reality, I do it without much thought about who's running. And I don't remember much about any campaigning.

Also the pay for clerks seems a bit out-of-whack.

The county clerk for the county in which I now live makes $94,000 a year. The county has a population of about 580,000.

Rowan County, Ky., has about 24,000 people and the clerk makes $80,000.

I read somewhere yesterday (sorry forgot where) that Ms. Davies fancies herself MLK 2.0 when in reality she's the bus driver telling the Negroes to get in the back of the bus 2.0.

I'm not going back over 50 pages to see if anyone posted this, but this Twitter account is fucking hilarious.

I'm not. The premise of the discussion is that everyone could go nude. There already are sickos out there. It's not that current nudists are more likely to be sickos, or that going nude would suddenly make more people become sickos. It's that the current sickos would have a better opportunity to violate others if they were no longer required to be covered up.

"Why the heck is county clerk an elected position?"

Most likely to eliminate patronage. If the position is elected, there is at least a pretense that the person doing the job is qualified, and not a politically-appointed patronage hack.

OTOH, since her family has held this position for the last 40 years or so, and since one of her kids worked in the office and, we can surmise, was being groomed to be her successor, sometimes reality doesn't match up with intent.
