I thought you were either referring to his Democratic convention speech, or his speech in Germany which drew 200K+, which was when the CELEBRITY! screeches hit their apex.

The Ben Carson speech Baron. You have no idea, do you?

For Obama, prior to his candidacy, it was obviously the convention speech.

You asked what he was other than being a celebrity. I answered. He was a senator for three years.

Keep changing the question to get he answer you want, though.

What, his prayer breakfast one where he took a non-partisan event and turned it partisan? That one?

Or was it the one where he compared the ACA to slavery?

But he'd held elective office and was running for U.S. senator.

Trump was a real estate magnate, but he's a brand first. He's also a reality TV star, and reality show demographics favor Republican voters.

Maybe he's thinking of the one where he praised ISIS.

Here's one thing about Trump: Has he ever shown empathy for anyone else?

Put it this way: Suppose something horrific happens, such as a disaster of some sort. Can you picture Trump hugging, or comforting people, without being worried that his hair would be mussed or acting bombastic? Bush, for all his many faults, was capable of showing empathy (Cheney, however, no way). Obama and Biden, certainly. Clinton, of course, was a master of "feeling your pain". (Gore a bit stiff, but perhaps). Carson, as a trained doctor, sure. Christie was wonderful with hurricane victims. Hillary, perhaps a bit icy, but still able to be sympathetic.

Trump's lived his whole life in a penthouse, being a big shot. Is he capable of caring about ordinary people when they are at their lowest point? There is more to being a president than just being able to talk trash.

You can't "show" empathy, you can simply project (or fail to project) it. To your point, Baron, the "good" ones -- e.g., Clinton, Dubya -- can conjure the appearance of empathy. It's a trick, one that is useful in electoral politics, but of little to no real value.

I read a column today that hypothesized that Trump's popularity is largely a reaction to the "feminization" of the culture, referring to universities that are now promoting the use of, for example, "ze" and "zir" instead of "he" and "her."
