If Trump wins the presidency, going back and reading this thread from start to finish will be bonkers. A diary of a lark morphing into something real.

If the GOP establishment doesn't intervene, it will probably be Trump, and if it does intervene, the ignorant people are going to (perhaps rightly) view it as a conspiracy to steal the nomination from their straight-shooting, un-PC guy. I don't think the ignorant people aren't going to stand idly by and line up behind some practically liberal politician like McCain or Romney this time. There will be a revolt.

I honestly think the No. 1 factor is that people think it's cool that a likable famous person is running for president.

Factor No. 1A is that, unlike the career pols that pose as outsiders, Trump actually is. That's why the "I hate the guv-mint" crowd is with him, even though his views are out of line with theirs.

It can be as simple as a large part of the voting public is made up of fucking morons.

Some of his views that we might not think of as mainstream Republican aren't really out of line with what the base actually thinks, though, such as his stance on Medicare and Social Security (note some of these edited for space).

Is being against illegal immigration racist?

It's what's propelled his campaign, it's what's enraged his opponents -- in both parties -- and it's the main reason why folks are trying to paint him as an illegitimate candidate.

I have concerns about how he'd govern. Would he be as conservative as I would hope? What kind of judges would he appoint, etc.

But, the meltdown some are having is ridiculous.

And of course, let's keep in mind that there's still 65-75% of the Republican party favoring someone other than Trump, and that it's not a given he's many people's second or third choice, once their first choice drops out.
