The accuser's lawyers are having a media conference in Buffalo tomorrow

Report on media conference via Tim Graham's twitter. Lawyer stating, per Graham, that evidence bag tampered with - delivered to accuser's mother. REALLY odd.

    That is really strange.

But we know Kaner has friends in high places who are unabashed in their loyalty, so maybe it's not so outlandish to think one of them could've destroyed the evidence.

And then sent it to her mom?

    I'm baffled.

I suppose a possible scenario could be that it was tampered with and left in the evidence locker or lab, where straight-laced, rule-following Sgt. Joe Friday saw it had been tampered with. Not wanting to risk backlash from the force, Sgt. Friday drops it on the steps of the accuser's mother's house so that the accuser would know it was tampered with, while not exposing himself to retaliation? Hell if I know.

This case is just getting strange.

Sure. It's a good way to let her know they shouldn't fuck with Kaner again, or it'll be "taken care of" again.

Serious question, because I've had very little exposure to criminal sexual assault and rape investigations - do the accusers typically have independent lawyers outside of government prosecutors?

If the allegation about the evidence bag/evidence tampering is true, it's obviously horrific and speaks to a huge level of corruption not only of the investigation, but the department. I will say that is also strikes me as really strange though. Theoretically, I guess a person who was tampering with evidence would be dumb enough just to throw the proof in the trash where anyone could find it (or try to use it to intimidate the victim's family, though the lawyer seemed to think it was a whistleblower). But that's a pretty strong level of stupidity when one could just burn the bag and no one would be the wiser.

Did they wrap it in a newspaper with a dead fish?

Did the accuser's lawyer offer anything to support his allegation or are we supposed to take his word that this happened?
