Some people place the authors of the constitution on a pedestal so high it's in the clouds on one issue, but completely ignore what they said about church and state.

Not dissatisfied at all ... Just amazed at the disparity between the size of the playing field and the size of (current) object of the game.

Fair enough. But it's worth noting that the federal government is so big (we're a big country, it'd be big if all it did was have a military and deliver the mail), that what is a small percentage sum, $500 million in this case, not enough to buy an NBA team, is still a lot of money for the organization and most of all, the clients it serves, who are a lot of people, although still a very small section of the population. The one thing the Founders DID correctly imagine about the future was that the US would grow, which is why the rules for admitting new states are so specific and detailed as compared to other parts of the Constitution, like, say, the office of Vice-President.

I can understand a GOPer's frustration. You have a good majority in the House, a majority in the Senate and still can't get what you want done. Throw in the idea that any deal the White House agrees to will be seen as questionable by a large part of the base, and you get what we have now.

I don't know who said it first but "The Republican House finally created a job"

Found a story talking about Boehner's potentially lucrative post-Congress lobbyist career funny. He's had such success getting legislators to do what he wants.

The Hyde Amendment legally prevents federal funding for abortion. Ending federal funding for Planned Parenthood only affects the other non-abortion services they provide.

Oh, I know, the GOP thinks if they end funding, then Planned Parenthood's donors will shift their abortion donations into non-abortion donations. But what they don't count on is that PP donors will be so pissed off, they'll keep funding abortions out of spite, and while there may be enough donors for non-abortion services after the GOP's actions, there is a risk that there will not be enough donors will be able to fund the other services.

It's the GOP, once again, not thinking ahead as to the consequences of their decisions. If they were successful, all they would do is cut the other services for the poor. It wouldn't affect abortion because of the Hyde Amendment.

What does the GOP want done? Does it have a legislative agenda? Is there anything veto-proof its disparate coalitions can agree about? I don't think there is anything that fits that description.

If at present there are people out there who contribute so as to further PP's abortion services, I find it hard to see how their continuing to do so (after a federal de-funding) would be "out of spite."

Sounds like a win-win. Taxpayers don't have to fund an organization that performs abortions, and sells baby parts, and the the organization comes out ahead, as their donors step up to fund them.

    Let's do it!

This shit cracks me up too.

Dems: It's a nothing burger. I can't believe you guys are making such a big deal out of such a small amount of money going to this one organization,

Republicans: Well, it's a big issue to our supporters, and many consider it an issue of conscience. Since you don't consider it a big deal, would you be willing to compromise with us on this issue?

Dems: Oh no. If you remove funding for PP, we'll shut down the government.
