So how many African-Americans currently living in America began their journey here on a slave ship?

Do you really not think that the institution of slavery contributed to holding back African-Americans in American society?

So you don't think there is any connection between today's struggles by African-Americans and the fact that their ancestors began their journey in America in forced slavery?

All right, DW, make your estimate. How much of the variation in individual economic/social outcomes would you estimate be attributed to the fact that an individual's ancestors were (or were not) slaves? Pretty sure you're not going to say 0%.

About as much as the Jewish suffering of the 1930s-40s in Europe has contributed to that group lagging behind the rest of the world in 2015. Oh, that's right. They're not lagging behind. Never mind.

I don't know how much we can attribute the fact that blacks on average earn less than Anglos to slavery. But after the Civil War we had systematic, institution discrimination for a century. I think the median age in this country is around 38. A 38 year old black was born in 1977, which means his/her parents were quite likely born in the 40's and 50's, and were facing the vestiges of that discrimination and his/her grandparents were squarely in the middle of it. Since how much someone earns appears to correlate- though it is not a coefficient of 1- to the success of their parents I find it very fair to attribute some of the economic travails of black Americans to slavery and then segregation.
