Why are Asian-Americans so successful in America?

There's a fine line between the Socratic method and becoming a toddler in the backseat asking "Why?" the entire trip.

Its always fun to see how outsiders tell the group in question what they should do and why they are doing what they do; especially social issues.

I was in a fraternity at a party school. We had about 55 guys in the house. Not a beacon of diversity, mostly white in-state kids from small town Wisconsin. All the rich out of state kids were in the mansion fraternities on the main drag.

    We had one black member.

    And an Asian kid.

He was from South Korea. "Call me Ray", he said. So we did.

In his sophomore year, he shows up for rush all by himself. Decent English and he said he wanted to stop spending his time in business classes and take film classes. He was in full rebellion of his parents half a world away.

This guy walks into a frat house during a party all by himself. I can't imagine, now, the stones that probably took.

Within a year, Ray had fully assimilated into the wild social life. He kept a 4.0 but worked his studies into his social. He was a helluva Judge Ito at Halloween. Usually had really attractive Asian girlfriend at all times. Now he's in LA, working in film and loving it.

Yet his parents showed up for his graduation. The whole weekend, his mom was giving him crap in Korean. He said it was about leaving business school and living with all these Americans. We acted like he was a tee totaling, upstanding citizen the whole time Mom and Dad were there.

But we knew. And he knew.

    And he loved the experience.

Maybe grown-ups need to ask that question more often then.

No one seems to want to answer it.

"Asians are successful because they value education."

OK. Great. Spot-on. But why do they value education?

"African-Americans are unsuccessful because they don't raise their children in nuclear families."

OK. We're getting somewhere. But why don't they raise their children in nuclear families?

"Why" is vitally important here. Because a possible answer is: They are an inferior race.

My son and daughter drive me crazy sometimes with how often they ask "why."

I hope they never stop asking it. Ever.

Get over yourself. Dixiehack nailed it, you seem to think you're educating us via some sort of socratic BS, when really you're just acting like a petulant toddler.

And nothing has been dodged, btw.

So the question is: "Why do blacks lag behind, economically, in America?"

The answer is: "They don't have nuclear families."

Or: "They have a culture that shames success."

And that's where the inquiry should end? That's what you're saying?

Maybe you should ask someone other than a handful of anonymous current or former sportswriters on an Internet message board.

    Perhaps a sociologist.

I shouldn't say they don't want to answer it. I understand we don't have the answers.

But people seem to not want to acknowledge that it's even a relevant question.

I honestly, at this point, am wondering if there are people on here who think that blacks are simply inferior.

    That must be it.
