The weight of history, essentially. There are, what? Around 30-40 million black people in America, a large percentage of whom are living in or near poverty? Or that are incarcerated. Just because there are no longer Jim Crow laws being enforced doesn't mean that they should be expected to spontaneously living like suburban soccer moms and dads. It's a self-perpetuating cycle.

I don't know that it did. My hypothesis would be that the War on Drugs and resulting mass incarceration split the nuclear black family, primarily.

 

Civil rights laws split the nuclear black family. Once they got to eat at the lunch counter with whites, no one wanted to go home and raise kids or anything.

 

How do white liberals do that, and, moreover, how does whatever white liberals are doing trump every other possibility?

I read the Kristof thing, and all I can say is, heaven help the narrow-minded bullshit. And by "narrow-minded," hell, I include the narrow-minded idea of success.

 

There is a possible correlation between the advent of legal equality (not de facto equality) and the demise of the black nuclear family. Not saying that once they saw the front of the bus you couldn't keep the family together, but don't ignore the seeming correlation.
