In fairness, WriteThinking would blow his/her stack if I posted the lyrics to "Jingle Bells" without comment.

I thought Dick's larger point is that he's the smartest guy here.

I don't think that's remotely close to being the case. I read and post here, in fact, because there are people here who are much smarter than me - and they have thoughts.

Oh, I don't know. From what I've seen, I cut you more slack than a lot of others, and am more willing than most to have a discussion, despite any snide little digs, gleeful asides, and the seemingly purposeful obtuseness.

Your biggest problem is, indeed, your inferiority complex. It makes you unable to have a discussion, or to consider something simple rather than thinking the whole world is just against you, no matter what.

You say that the idea that blacks don't value (or at least, generally, don't seem to) value education (i.e., they don't take advantage of it as much or as well as possible) is too simplistic an explanation. You say the same about the prevalence of single-parent/ineffectively parented families.

Are you saying that if those two things weren't so -- that if blacks did focus more on education and have stronger, more structured family units -- that any issues would not be improved by, oh, orders of magnitude, probably multiplied by orders of magnitude?

And yes, at root, we are talking about personal responsibility. Ben Carson doesn't have to be an occasional success story. But he will be until personal responsibility is taken by every person who can make a step toward improving the lot of African-Americans. Especially African-Americans.

The way the history of African-Americans began here is horrible, but unfortunately, it can't be changed at this point. So, now it still must be dealt with, and apparently responded to differently, whether by individual persons, or by a whole population, if anything ever is to change.

Why don't they just try harder?!

The obvious next step in this thread is for the Bigot Brigade to appear.

At what point did the 6-year-old in Gary who is already years behind my son in reading shirk his "personal responsibility"?
