We go by what we see, I guess.

In my 17 years as a student (1966-83) I never witnessed any student-teacher confrontation, either physical or even argumentative.

I had a math teacher who would pace around the classroom while lecturing, and punch people in the arm who weren't paying attention. He punched me once. He wasn't playing - that shit hurt like hell.

His punches also knocked out arms being used to prop up sleeping heads, thus causing the student's head to slam into the desk.

I know some people get wistful for the days of indiscriminate corporal punishment.

I feel bad for the students who couldn't sleep in class.

It may be their best defense against liberal indoctrination. Cut them some slack, Shine.

Quite the harmless exercise, indeed. It should be noted this class was algebra - I took it 25 years ago and haven't used the stupid shit once since.

Oh, sure you have. Problem-solving skills, etc. ... Just not the mathy part.

    At least that's not obtuse.

Hypotenuse ... when obtuse simply isn't enough.

    3, 4, 5 doesn't even require math.

You should be able to just remember that one.

    False. This shit -- (x + 3)(x + 2) + 3 = x2 + 5x + 9 -- taught me nothing except how to waste time and be miserable.
