Glanville's proper response to the officer's initial inquiry -- "I'm clearing the driveway so your wife won't have to park in the snow."

    You are muddling things.

But I am with your wife on all of those things, if it helps. At least I would be if we had been having that discussion. I find all of those things just as ridiculous as your wife does -- if I am not infringing on anyone else with my behavior, I agree that I should be free to make decisions about most things (what I eat, what I drink, how I live, what I do, where I go, etc.) for myself. And that is obviously less and less true as time goes on.

None of those things have anything to do with this particular conversation, but if the general idea is that we have shifted farther and farther away from the notions of liberty that generally define our country (without intrusion on our lives by others), and more into a nanny state that has enacted endless rules about what we may and may not do, yup, that is what we are living with.

It begins with paternalistic nudnicks who have the hubris to think they know what is best for everyone -- and are going to protect everyone from themselves (what YOU or I actually want for ourselves doesn't matter). And with that mentality, the predictable has happened, and the endless number regulatory bodies we have drowned ourselves in, empowered with more and more nonsensical regulatory power, have ended up corrupt institutions that infringe on your choices to benefit special interests that more often than not buy those regulations for their benefit.

But that is a completely different discussion.

This is another example of thinking black and white.

Yes, racial profiling exists. Just not quite as much as you personally think. Probably more than some others think.

Moderate thought is just not a very popular thing here. Because moderate thinking doesn't make for good, I-am-a-victim arguments.

Glanville wrote a really good piece last week, maybe two weeks ago on being black and the difficulties of getting a cab.

It made me think of a late night bit from years ago where they James Earl Jones (I think) try to hail a cab and none of the cabbies would stop.

I initially said no, but then they threatened to call for the drug dog. I was on my way to visit family and just wanted to get back on the road. I begrudgingly said yes, sat there for 10 minutes while they went through my car and left when they were done. It was a bullshit stop to begin with -- I was pulled over for passing the cop "too fast" when he was finishing up a traffic stop -- and I was pissed. But I was smart enough not to exacerbate the situation.

Oh, hell, they don't stop for me either.

When I was shortly out of high school, a friend was stopped and his car searched. Dogs. Everything. Apparently, someone had described his make, model, and color car - a maroon Lumina - in connection with some crime, drug-related, as I recall. I'm not sure if the guy has ever ingested anything stronger than an Advil, to this day. Straight arrow. I guess their "probable cause" was the fact his car fit the description.

And that actually reminds me of why a lot of minority teen-agers shy away from police encounters. I think they are frequently stopped because they match some type of description connected to a crime - burglary, shooting, drug deal, whatever it might be. From there, it's a really easy closing argument to a jury:

"What an unlucky fellow! He just happened to be wearing the same shirt and pants as the perpetrator! He just happened to be in the neighborhood wearing those clothes!"

Yeah. That's how it works. If you say no, they say they will bring the drug dog.

Haven't had that happen but probably would have let them. Not anymore. Bring the damn dog.
