    Of course they do!

They just want the money spent well.

East St. Louis teachers just went on strike.

A first year teacher in East St. Louis currently makes $42,786 is salary alone. With health insurance, schedule, and pension, is that not competitive?

Is it not well above the average salary in East St. Louis?

Now, how are those schools doing? Did those teachers merit a raise?

Some charter schools fail, some are very good. There are some where there are lotteries to get in, so I don't think those parents are so pro-union.

The jobs that pay less usually have the medical benefits and pension. People trade the higher paying job for less money and better benefits. I know a couple guys who went from corporate to teaching.

Tony noted that 13 percent of the population commits more than 50 percent of the homicides. To which you responded:

I don't understand what this post means. What is "hard to get around" about those percentages? And who would it "offend[]"? Has someone denied that blacks commit violent crime at a higher rate than other races in America? It's the damned driving engine of these discussions.

No they don't. That's absurd. Union teachers have far greater benefits.

No, it's not. Not even close.

Settle down, big guy. Your kids are cuter than ours, even if your reading comprehension is lacking.

What's "hard to get around" about those numbers? What larger truth do they hint at?

    Of course it it.

Because, as Cran points out, the benefits are great -- vacation, insurance, pension. It's well above what the parents of the students they teach make. It's the best job in East St. Louis.

And, it's more than most first year journalists could dream of, with much better job security, and benefits.

Would we get better teachers if we paid even more? Maybe. You've argued against this in the past. (It's a calling!)

But, if we're going to pay more for better teachers, than we need a process to either get rid of the current bad ones, or pay teachers based on performance. There's no point in just giving a raise to every teacher. The bad ones won't get better because they got a raise.

We also need to look at the schools that are pumping out teachers. Many of them are terrible.

I have never, ever made this argument. I have consistently made the opposite argument.

It's silly to say it's the "best job in East St. Louis." No one worth their salt is coming to East St. Louis, or Gary, or Flint, or Camden, for $42,000 a year. No one.

And vacation time doesn't pay the bills.

You are not going to attract talent for $42,000 a year.

Haven't you said repeatedly that it's not about the money for people like your wife?
