Just joking with ya. It's actually something I would probably say.

So people in college regularly flunk student teaching, huh? Show me. Because I ran the numbers on my university and, of the student teaching hours attempted in a given semester, over a three-year period every hour attempted was passed. And that's not hours attempted after the drop date, that's hours attempted at the very beginning of the semester.

I knew someone who failed, but that was actually more of an indictment of the broken system.

She was basically thrown to the wolves and criticized at every turn. Did she make mistakes? Sure. But this person could have been a decent teacher with a little help.

So the fact that there is an effective teacher rating system in Michigan has what in the fuck to do with YF's contention that "most student teaching doesn't teach prospective teachers to teach."

For someone who's supposedly such an expert in education, you sure as hell appear to have no clue as to what a counter-argument looks like.

Both of our kids went through public schools.

Some teachers suck. Most are pretty good. A few are great.

Principals can have the biggest impacts on schools. Good ones are gold. Bad ones should be quickly drummed out.

Engaged parents and eager students can get what they need from most school systems.

Lots of kids from bad situations start 5 steps behind everyone else. Many quickly start to hate school and become resentful, and it gets worse from there.

Hate to use one observation to prove a point, but 93Devil being employed by a public school is telling.

When 93Devil threw that bullshit out there a few years ago, I did three things. First, I talked with the couple dozen teacher friends I have, and not a one could remember a soul who'd flunked student teaching. Second, I talked to friends who are professors of education at a relatively prestigious school of education in Devil's neck of the woods. They, committed teacher educators that they were, laughed at his contention. Finally, I went to the trouble to run the numbers for my university, which cranks out a lot of credentialed teachers every year. Does everyone pass student teaching? No. But Ivory Soap made a reputation from being 99 & 44/100% pure; the people who oversee our student teachers sections laugh at such a low pass rate.

So let's say you get some salary that's less than you currently make, but more than would be on offer. For convenience, let's say the market-clearing salary for people of your abilities is $100,000.

Would people capable of commanding that salary be more or less willing to call in the SRO in a situation like this?

    What's SRO stand for?

SRO ... Student Resource Officer ... Awfully Orwellian, don't you think?

In this case, Officer Slam ... the cop that manhandled this girl.

Even though there are some crappy teachers out there, I don't think teachers are really prepared for everything "teaching" entails. Schools need to be hubs for social workers, psychologists, dentists, and before and after-school care.

Good luck trying to teach a kid who has crappy parents who don't give a crap what their children do and have little structure. My brother's family does not have family meals, the little kids get to stay up as late as they want, they get to play with their electronics without limits, don't get read to at night, and have to deal with him and his wife constantly fighting. Edward James Olmos isn't putting out that dumpster fire.

I have no idea what point of mine you think you've slapped down with this post, or what point you think you've made.

Should Michigan's teacher rating system rely more or less heavily on student test performance, and to what end?
