This was already answered -- better hiring.

You are playing the bitter community member role to a hilt -- acting as if there should be all of these "after-the-fact" options and pretending there weren't any "before-the-fact" options.

I'm not sure why you keep trying to twist bigger class sizes into this. Larger class sizes don't boost student success.

Those don't seem, to me, to be of the type your analogy suggests. Nevertheless, I promised I wouldn't go NQT on you.

Am I wrong in thinking that those changes are relatively recent (say, 5 to 10 years old)? So we'd need to wait, what, 15 to 20 years to see how they pan out? Fair enough.

But, in the meantime, what are we going to do about that teenage girl and her cellphone?

Huh? Those were major initiatives. You don't think No Child Left Behind was an engine overhaul?

And yes, we should wait longer than 5-10 years to see how things play out. It takes 12 years for one class to move from entrance to graduation.

Finally, good of you to defend that original purpose of the thread at the end.

Babysitters make, what, $8 an hour?

OK, 25 kids in a class x $8 an hour is $200 an hour. Teachers are in school for 7 hours a day, and we won't even get into the extra work they do at home. So that's $1,400 a day. Times 180 days a year, and that's $252K a year. For a babysitter.

    Next.

I've been thinking to myself, "This thread needs some Baronmath." Lo-and-behold, you delivered.

    So what?

It's better to have them attend schools built for 1,000+ kids, when less than half attend?

They're currently forced to go to one particular school. Let them choose.

Why are liberals and teachers' unions afraid of this?

Why are white liberals in New York and Chicago so against having their children attend public schools with African-American children?

It's not about liberals or teachers' unions. Parents want neighborhood schools.

    So, give parents school choice.

And, if a kid is a problem, or isn't doing the homework required, limit their choices.

I'm not claiming larger class sizes -- in and off themselves -- boost student success.

But, many here seem to be arguing that smaller class sizes do.

    Is that true?

I'll have to find the numbers. I know you have some card up your sleeve you like to throw down here from time to time, a study that indicates that class size doesn't matter.

I would guess that there's a sweet spot. Below a certain size, and students suffer because there aren't enough classmates to challenge each other or whatnot. Above a certain class size, students suffer because there's not enough individualized instruction.

Ohio has open enrollment. You can choose another school if you like. Not all schools participate, but enough do.
