    I've read similar stuff about the declaration of the caliphate. The radical Sunnis see their role as leading to some cataclysmic event. This is right out of the seventh century.

    The ruling Shia's in Iran -- who the Sunnis basically view as apostates -- hold similar views.

    They're waiting for the 12th Imam/the Mahdi/the Muslim Messiah to return, and believe that a cataclysmic event is what's needed to bring him back.
