When you are so painfully smart at such a young age, it is sometimes hard to live in the real world.

Taking the fact that he is smart and intelligent as a given, maybe he is having trouble processing his thoughts on current issues into language and ideas that he thinks the base wants to hear.

If he called Syrian refugees rabid dogs in Latin, it would sound a whole lot more scholarly and stuff.

Carson seems to recognize that he is perceived as having weak foreign policy experience, so he has decided to burnish his credentials by taking a trip.
