Abortions after viability are already illegal, except for cases when the woman's life and/or health, depending on the state, are in danger.

The stage in which a fetus may feel pain is in dispute scientifically as of now.

Prior to those stages, it is about respecting others' beliefs.

And that carried by the woman thing is a pretty big thing to be hanging one's hat on. So big, in fact, that there are cultural milestones to celebrate the day when she's no longer carrying the fetus.

 

But, you're not in favor of these laws, are you?

Also, the health of the mother is a loophole wide enough to drive a truck through.

 

Which laws?

I've already said I'm in favor of not permitting abortions after viability, with the exceptions of the life and health of the woman. The problem I have is certain people claim fetuses are viable if they only have a heartbeat.

 

Why is "viability" the key determining factor, anyways?

That's part of why parenthood is such a huge undertaking. Because you sign up to raise a child, meaning you take on the obligation of teaching and doing everything for the child that he/she can't do for themselves yet.

That means carrying them until they're able to live outside the womb. That means feeding them until they can feed themselves. That means changing their shitty diapers until they can go in the toilet. Etc. Etc.

It has no bearing on when "life" actually starts.

 

No disagreement. Human offspring need a ton of parenting. A baby is only as viable as his/her parent is willing to take care of them.

 

I say we turn the internet back on in Oregon and make the remaining Real Muricans read the last few pages.
