Yes, considering the barrier to vote in a primary is minimal. In Canada, you at least have to be a card-carrying member of a party.

Hell, Trump has been Democrat and registered with the Reform Party. I don't think party leaders expected a candidate with no core ideology to have a shot at the nomination.

Yes, it is. These are for the nominations of established political parties with clear ideological agendas. They don't have to have elections at all, they could go back to the back-room days. They've chosen to have primary elections, mostly for the free press it creates, but they also put in safeguards to make sure someone with outright hostile positions to the party's can't take the nomination.

Some states are like that, as well. A dozen or so have closed primaries.

Indiana has an open primary. I remember this because in 2008, Rush Limbaugh was trying to encourage Republicans in that state to vote for Hillary Clinton, to muck up the Democratic nominating process.

Silly me. I thought getting more votes was an effective campaign.

I was told it was a hijacking.

Correct. And it can be quite effective.

I'm not entirely clear why you think "hijacking" and "effective campaigning" are somehow mutually exclusive.

I don't think the parties are particularly worried about the ineffective hijackings.

Pretty bold of Christie and Fiorina to give up their campaigns for Lent.

It was either that or candy for Christie.

And kicking, screaming baby parts for Fiorina.
