I've seen them. I've covered them. They weren't this bad. They've gotten progressively bad over the years. There is more pride -- a LOT MORE -- in your average pickup game at the Y than there is on the defensive end tonight.

I thought the book on the NBA all-star game is that for the first three quarters there's about as much defense as in your average Globetrotters-Generals game. Then they get serious in the fourth quarter and try to win it.

The last time the winning team scored less than 100 points in an NBA all-star game was 1954. The last time it was under 110 was 1975.
The NBA all-star game has never been about defense.

It's Obama's fault. And he's coming for your guns.

I don't think the East vs. West matters any more. Fans want the thunder slams, And 1 acrobatics and the Splash Bros. Defense? That's for the regular season.

Sounds like @old_tony wants more "hands up" on D, "don't shoot" on O.

I find the lack of diversity in the NBA to be quite shocking. Maybe the NBA should follow MLB's lead and create diversity positions in the league office. Recruit minorities and have a diversity summit to address the historic inequities.

First NBA game I ever saw was 1960 All-Star Game in Philly. I was 10 at the time. East won, as they had Wilt and Russell. I agree with you, Tony. Back in the '80s, there was a lot of showboating but guys had to earn their place on the boat as it were by actually beating a player on the court instead of a friendly mannequin. Game is drifting down to Pro Bowl level, and my interest has waned accordingly. I watched first quarter and that was it.

Some of the NBA All-Star scores in the halcyon Sixties when defensive giants like Russell roamed the earth:

    153-131, 150-130, 137-94, 135-120, 144-124, 142-135

Yep, it's definitely gotten worse. Not long ago watched some of the 87 all star game and was really surprised at the level of competitiveness and effort on both sides of the floor. It was miles different from what the ASG has devolved into today. We've seen the same sort of regression with the Pro Bowl (except even worse), it used to at least resemble a real football game, now I don't know what it is.

Today's athletes simply will not risk injury by giving real effort in a damn all star game, which is why the fans might be best served to just stop watching the things.

Scoring was higher because there were more shots taken overall in those days. The All-Star Game featured many shooters. Nobody expects or expecclampdown defense in the game, if only because that requires more teamwork than an All-Star team can create. But a modicum of one-on-one defense used to exist within the shootouts.
