My guess: He probably worked fairly cheap and didn't mind doing the grunt work of sifting thru the work of us worthless peons in exchange for the prestige that came with being LONGFORM GUY. And then they got the big names as guest editors.

    The prestige always seemed unearned.
As far as I know he's written a few coffee-table books on the Red Sox and some features for ESPN.
Right guy at the right time, as most of this stuff works out. The same kinds of pieces ran every year, from the same Algonquin Round Table, so it's not like the template evolved.

Son of Bold Venture: IN DEFENCE OF LONGFORM

a feature that took eight months to write, involved traveling to 13 states and cost upwards of $100K? Um, link please? Anyway, that blog post from Jones was pretty damn condescending. The people who could actually write the best longform magazines articles don't -- they write books.

I don't disagree, but you can see how an inexpensive, reliable option would last 25 years.

And a damn fine piece of writing it was, too.

It's also the best magazine story -- or maybe any story -- ever published, IMO. Just a tremendous piece of work.

In 2014, Vox Media, which owns SBNation, was valued at $400 million, and last year, it was valued at a billion. If you or anyone else wants to work for them for free, or for a nickel a word, without enough editors or a travel budget, knock yourself out. I'd rather work at Home Depot.*

*Not a slam on Home Depot or its employees. I really do fantasize about working there.
