Why are we even arguing this? It's politics. Both sides play politics.

    Seriously.

If Republicans weren't utilizing every bit of leverage they have in this situation, it would be a dereliction of duty on their part. This opening is a huge deal. Bigger than losing all five Senate seats over it, if that's the worst-case scenario. If the Democratic argument back is, "We wouldn't do this," then the only proper answer is, "Well, why the fuck not?"

Does anyone still want to seriously argue that politicians don't put their party before the good of the country?

Actually, the more accurate comeback would be, "You already have."

Well, in this case I can understand that nominating a SCOTUS justice who could tip decisions their way would probably seem to be in the best interest of the country from either side's view.

They think that it's one and the same, though.

EDIT: Ace beat me to it.

I have no doubt they believe unyielding party orthodoxy is best for the country.

I don't blame the GOP for going into DEFCON 4 over this, but to act like Obama would be plunging the nation into a bitter struggle by putting forth a nominee is silly.

Hey looky here -- the Nevada governor withdraws his name from consideration. Big shock.

Nevada Governor Withdraws Name From High Court Consideration

I am sure that in certain quarters Obama still gets credit for invoking a political version of the Rooney Rule and pretending to be interested in talking to a Republican.

Want to bet that his phone was ringing off the hook this morning with people pressuring him to withdraw or be excommunicated?
