Given his pragmatic default, I could see Obama seriously considering a moderate Republican for the post. In fact, I'd lay money on him not trying to tip the court by putting forward a liberal justice.

The rest of the process will prove it. He'll nominate a Democrat.

I wonder if the Democrat will decide not to take the job, like the Republican.

Now, that should probably be in blue font.

China is such an unimportant country to the national economy. You're right. The job is almost a throwaway post.

I am perfectly comfortable saying that ambassador to China, which carries no actual authority, and Supreme Court justice are in different worlds regarding their importance to the process of government.

I don't know how anyone can disagree with that, in fact.

DEFCON 4 isn't very high. 5 is peace. DEFCON 1 is impending nuclear war. The SAC hit DEFCON 2 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Just some FYI - a common misinterpretation.

And that would be surprising how? What would be wrong with it? Not that I don't think he'll put forward a moderate nominee.

It's not like a Republican in today's climate would nominate a Democrat.

Nobody changed the rules, tony, and I never said the Republicans couldn't do something the Democrats did.

What I said is if you claim the Republicans are justified now, you must admit that the Democrats were justified in taking similar action in the past or you are a hypocrite. If the Democrats were wrong to do it in the past, then the Republicans are wrong to do it now.

Of course, you aren't interested in evaluating their actions based on merit just as Republicans aren't interested in evaluating anybody Obama might nominate based on merit. If the Republicans do it, you will defend it. If the Democrats do it, you will attack it.
