Both parties have taken both positions, depending on who was nominating. It's politics, pure and simple.

If the Republicans had simply let Obama make a nomination and then voted it down, there would not be all this wrangle. It's that McConnell came out and bluntly said that not only will they not approve any nominee no matter how qualified, but that they would not hold hearings, listen to the nominee, or meet with him. At that point the Senate Judiciary Committee is refusing to do its duty under the Constitution.

"Party of No" ring a bell?

We'll see what happens when there's a nominee. If McConnell refuses to hold hearings at that point, OK, now we have something. Until then, this is a lot of sound and fury.

The GOP has no incentive to move quickly. Things can't get worse for them if they muck the whole deal up for another 11 months. It's already that bad. So they're applying what little leverage they have.

If they refuse to do their jobs, we should send all those turkey-neck shitheads home, without pay, and hold special elections to fill their seats.

    Dereliction of duty.

The longer this goes on, the more I'm sure McConnell and company went public with their declaration to not consider a nominee as a way to force Obama's hand on selecting someone they can stand.
This way, in a few months when they DO hold a hearing and confirm ONLY a candidate they want, they can claim a victory in how they "did their job" and "compromised" for the sake "of the country.
Ah, who am I kidding? There's a sizable portion of their base that would donate everything they had if the GOP just admitted they're blocking the process because "F**k that [n-word]."

McConnell is the king of talking tough and then caving. It's a big reason we have Trump and Cruz leading the race now. Won't surprise me in the least if he flip flops on this eventually (and he should, because waiting a full year to fill a Supreme Court vacancy is stupud).

Any candidate wild-ass reactionary right-wing enough for the bagger party to accept would be so toxic to Dems, libs and progressives, that THEY would torpedo such a nomination.

Although it wouldn't be the first time Obumbo shat down the throats of 85% of his own base in order to appease the psychomoonbats on the other side.

And that has worked out so awesomely well in building up bipartisan goodwill.

That's why I use DEFCON 3 to indicate heightened agitation. I can't keep it straight either.
