Buckley tried to insulate the conservative movement from the Birchers, but the Birchers and the religious extreme have seized control of the party.
Buckley would spin in his grave. It is sad.

When you lie down with dogs, you get fleas - dumb, racist fleas.

Conservatives never notice ANY taxes other than federal income. It's the only one they can demonize the poor with (and play the role of generous daddy footing the bill), and they'll ride that horse as long as they can.

My state is fully in the tub with Grover Norquist... which means that they won't raise taxes for very necessary things, but will raise "fees" on everything you can think of that the state does. Car titles. Marriage Licenses. You name it.

Should Trump be the nominee and party bosses decide to focus on Congressional races rather than back him, would that be bad? It may be a good time for Republicans to try and define themselves. Are they still the party of Reagan, big on defense and business? A haven for the religious right and tea partiers? Or blowhards like Trump?

They go together like peas and carrots, though. The presidential election energizes people to vote, not the Congressional races. You can't snub Trump and expect to perform well in those races, as if they are some separable entity.

Look for Trump to co-opt this policy any day now:
