I did like Stallone as well as Tessa Thompson. But Rocky, in the original, had motivation and obstacles. Micky was a great character. The scene when Micky comes to Rocky's house to ask to manage him was powerful, sad and poignant. THat it was built upon in the previous scene at the gym where Micky dismisses Rocky as a nobody makes it so great. None of that was present in Creed. Donnie didn't know Apollo was his father for years, and it presented little motivation. He had it tough in the beginning, but by the time he was 12-13 years old, he was living very well and was loved.

Rocky had a revelation and the ability to turn his life around by finally being the best he could. I didn't buy Donnie's motivation. Also, while I could see Rocky taking Donnie on to train as a debt to Apollo, it wasn't portrayed well in the movie.

I just didn't buy it. RIght down to the split decision like Rocky

Just to cross-thread for a minute, but wasn't Buck Henry one of the writers on 'Catch 22'?

  6. Finding Vivian Maier ... Very enjoyable.
She was crazy for sure. But I came away with a ton of respect for John Maloof, the kid who put the whole thing together. Phenomenal work.

You pretty much nailed it. I enjoyed it well enough, but it was far from outstanding or original. Donnie's character was not given a convincing motivation. I'm glad Stallone didn't win Best Supporting Actor bc the guy from Bridge of Spies was excellent.

Just watched "A Little Romance" on TCM for the first time. Diane Lane's first movie. Directed by George Roy Hill. I liked that in the theater scene the kids were watching "The Sting," another George Roy Hill film. And one of my favorites of all time, "The World According to Garp," also is a George Roy Hill film.

Anyway, "A Little Romance" was a nice two hours.

Some good ones there. As a hockey nut, I'm a "Slap Shot" nut. I've also always enjoyed the goofy "Funny Farm" flick, as well.

Yes. A nice little thriller. In the Stephen King wheelhouse.
