"Disenfranchisement" is a dumb buzzword people like to throw around. Nobody is disenfranchised by a brokered convention.

Didn't we *just* go through this in 2008, when one of conservatives' defense mechanisms against the clear impending Obama win was to declare "The Bradley Effect," by which racists lied to pollsters and Obama wasn't really winning?

It turned out to be total nothing.

The president is not a direct representative of "the people." He/she is also theoretically capable of unilateral tyranny. Members of Congress are not.

And, Stain, if you don't like "disenfranchised," what term would you use for what "establishment" Republicans are discussing to prevent Trump from getting the nomination? Do you think those millions and millions of voters will sit quietly while their voices are rendered meaningless?

    Fair enough.

Why are those millions and millions more important than the even more millions and millions who voted for someone else?

The *only* way that a brokered convention can happen is if Trump does not have a majority. Which means that the majority voted against him.

Hahaha. Fair. But how often do people bitch that there's no good person to elect president? Maybe if, when we find a good president, we should be able to keep them around.

This is blatant disregard of the Old Tony Chronicles.

In theory it seems to make sense, but as MC points out, that's a risky proposition.

Only if you don't trust the American people.

I probably am naive in that I tend to think that most people who do run for public office are doing it for the right reasons. We lose plenty of truly qualified people because we are in a gotcha era where scandals rule.

Most of the Congress, Senate and presidential candidates that I've covered - and I've been the political specialist for the last four elections - strike me as in it for good, based on their background.

The slimeballs that I encounter tend to me in the state legislative level as they know a national office would probably bring too much exposure.
