This was years ago, but my last time at Lugers -- and it is a pretty tough place for someone who doesn't eat meat -- was with someone you know. He had heard it was a good steak and wanted to try -- he no longer eats red meat, this was when he still ate steak. So I drove us over there when he was in town. The waiter came and I ordered, "Steak for two." When he brought it out, he went to shovel some onto a plate for me, I said, "None for me, thanks." He thought I was nuts.

You regularly spend 150 bucks on dinner? Sheeeeiit. I'm in the wrong business.

If you're in or near OC, go down to Laguna Beach and try Selanne's Steak Tavern (owned by future NHL Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne, who is there a lot). Pricey, delicious, definitely a special occasion place. Let me know what you think.
We also go to Houston's (same owner at Hillstone's) on occasion. Hawaiian ribeye, yeah!!

Lot of times I will just go to the bar at Morton's or other expensive steak places and order some drinks and appetizers.

All the atmosphere, half the price, twice the drinks.

    (I'm kind of cheap, BTW.)

The slogan my wife and I came up with for Golden Corral after our one visit was "It Sounded Like a Good Idea." Just dreadful. I saw some uncooked steaks on the edge of the grill and wondered if that's what prison meat would look like.

Never turn down poutine. Should pretty much be a hard-and-fast life rule.

Roger Penske had a pre-Indy 500 media dinner at the downtown Indy Ruth's Chris for quite a while, was one of my favorite meals of the year. Yeah, big steakhouses are always enjoyable on someone else's dime but Ruth's filet and cheesecake were still top-notch. But one year I went for the NY Strip on the limited menu instead of the filet, huge tactical error. Always stick with the fist-sized filet.

There's no such thing as a "vodka martini."

I've never been to a Ruth's Chris, but almost. I was covering the WCC basketball tournament many years ago when they somehow let Portland host. Hotel was a Red Lion (I think) and Ruth's Chris was across the street. I decided that after two days of arena foot, I would splurge on Ruth's Chris since the Monday championship game didn't start until 9 p.m. Got all my other work done and walked across the street to Ruth's Chris about 6 p.m. CLOSED MONDAYS. Can't miss what you've never had ... never been tempted to try again, although the Ruth's Chris is in the same center as the Houston's we go to frequently.
I went to Bern's in Tampa once during spring training. What I remember most was well-located signs every block directing you there as you drove through one of the worst ghettos I've ever seen. Ah, and Bobby Valentine was there that night.

Tell it to my wife. Vodka does nothing for me. I substitute tequila for vodka in drinks. You may not like my screwdrivers.

Damn. You must live a sheltered life. Bern's is in South Tampa. Hardly a ghetto, though it's not Bayshore Boulevard.

I can't imagine anyone going to an Indy Ruth's Chris when there's St. Elmo's. Of course a media event is different, but on my own dime (OK, 0wn $200), it's no contest.
