Does anyone think there would have been a dozen GOP candidates if they couldn't/didn't count on one or two sugar daddies to fuel their bid? Or be able to count on a couple hundred mil from the Koch's for the general if they won the nom?

The Senators in 1987 had all been old enough to read newspapers in 1974.

In his memoirs, published posthumously, Bork later confessed that Nixon had indeed offered to make Bork his next Supreme Court nominee in exchange for firing Cox.

Robert Bork had been promised a seat on the Supreme Court by Richard Nixon in exchange for his role in firing the Special Prosecutor in the Watergate investigation

Oh. So you were being sarcastic?

But, why was it not a big issue during his hearings?

Why didn't Teddy mention it in his statement?

Both of those quotes are from the authors of the article you linked to, giving their interpretation.

    Neither quote Bork's memoir.

    Dahhhhhh I wonder why.

Because then KENNEDY would have been accused of carrying on an obsessive vendetta against sweet and innocent Private Citizen Nixon, living quietly in California.

Kennedy didn't have to say it because every senator knew it.

Yeah, but he was never indicted for anything. That means it's OK.

From an AP story on the book:

Robert Bork says President Richard Nixon promised him the next Supreme Court vacancy after Bork complied with Nixon's order to fire Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox in 1973. ...

Shortly after he sent Cox a two-paragraph letter, he was taken in to see Nixon. Bork says the resignation and firings should have been called "The Saturday Night Involuntary Manslaughter" because Nixon didn't plan the episode, but blundered into it.

It was in that conversation that Bork says Nixon for the first and only time offered up the next Supreme Court seat."

The compulsion to defend/ excuse Darth Milhous and his stooges runs deep, even beyond the grave.

Senators (mostly Democrats) knew why they were voting against Bork.

Same reason you'd vote against Bill Clinton if he was nominated as dorm monitor for a school for 16-year-old cheerleaders.

Everyone would have a nice long list of official reasons to vote against him, but everyone would REALLY be voting against him for one reason, and everyone would know it.

A letter to the editor is your proof? And a blog on CNN.com that's "not verified by CNN"?
