If one of my co-workers brought a kid into the office every day, I think I'd be within my rights to straighten the kid out if the occasion arose.

That's not what I'm talking about.

I'm referring to the fact that seemingly every sports columnist and talk radio host in Chicago was emboldened to discuss why he believed that a "clubhouse is no place for a 14-year-old," or that, "he should be in school," none of which was Ken Williams's issue with it.

But he thinks he would be, so that makes it OK.

I went to a festival in a trendy, gentrified street in our city over the weekend. The area has the hot new restaurants and galleries. A retro swing band was playing, and there were goat races.

There were also lots of people with babies and young kids and a surprising number of really drunk 20- and 30-somethings in the middle of the afternoon.

So all was pretty much right with the world.

I didn't think I could give less of a fuck what people thought about me out in public -- until I had kids.

I was thinking more along the lines of making the kid stand in the corner with a dunce hat on. I'm not a fan of people interfering with other people's parenting, but I'm even less of a fan of people who think it's generally OK for their kids to act like assholes or annoy the hell out of other people in public places. Console the baby or talk to the youngster calmly, and if they don't moderate their behavior, then take them and leave, underscoring to them the point that people who act like assholes in public don't get to stay in public.

As the country gets older, this selective sight is only going to get worse.

Speaking for other people AND adding nothing? You've outdone yourself.
