Charlotte used to have a fairly large Internet porn movie industry in the early 2000s.

 

A few years ago, at a college newspaper reunion, I ran into this guy I knew very tangentially in college. He'd been a comp sci major in college, but when I asked him if he was still doing that he sort of soft-pedaled that he had his own business in Charlotte. I didn't press, but finally he told me that he'd written some code/applications for e-commerce that, unbeknownst to him, had turned out to be perfect for the online porn industry. His business, quite profitable, was simply managing the licensing of that software.

 

And they say the American Dream is dead.

 

Well, he did admit that his parents bought him lunch once ...

Dusty Rhodes: Porn HOF?

 

Had a similar experience a couple of years ago at a small HS reunion. Chubby, nerdy, happy-go-lucky guy who was named the schools most congenial our senior year was one of the more popular guys there. And all most of the guys wanted to ask about was his marketing job in the porn business. Never would have guessed it.

 

I probably should emphasize that per him my guy never set out to be involved in the porn industry. He was doing some e-commerce applications on the side and began to be pleasantly surprised by all of these licensing orders coming in for a particular subset of his product line. As it continued, he started looking into the companies buying his stuff -- they had very generic names -- and was surprised by what he found.

 

I used to know one of the Bang Bus guys.
