Georgia Tech hires a younger coach who has lots of talent but also a record of underperforming when it matters.

Good to see Tech back to its roots.

I'm told MTSU coach Kermit Davis has interest in the Memphis job and may bring former LSU and ASU coach John Brady aboard as an assistant.

Penny Hardaway will get the job before they reach that far down. Hell, Lil' Penny will get the job first.

Detroit Mercy whacked Ray McCallum last week, so they're in the low-majors sweepstakes too. Several No. 3 assistants at B1G schools are in the rumor mix.

They should've jumped on LaVall Jordan before Milwuakee did.

Any thoughts on the Memphis opening? It's maybe not a top fifteen job, but probably is top twenty. The program has facilities, tradition, and a fertile recruiting ground. Downside is that the Grizzlies are probably bigger there than the Tigers nowadays. I know they wanted Gregg Marshall, but figure that he was the first one they talked to and if it was going to happen it would have by now. Penny Hardaway is in the mix but has no NCAA coaching experience. He's done some successful youth and high school coaching and he bleeds blue but still looks like a bit of a risk. Buzz William's name has been out there, but I don't know if Memphis will spend the buyout and contract money. Other than that, things seem to get kinda dicey fast. Kermit Davis, Steve Forbes?

What kind of buyout does Bruce Pearl have at Auburn?

Today's hot rumor is Tubby Smith. Per both Wolken and Gary Parrish. Memphis message board hoping for Penny as an assistant.

In a vacuum he wouldn't be bad but for the money they'd spend to (at most) lose in the 7-10 game every other year, they could do better. Wait and see which NBA coaches are free after this week if nothing else. Or save your pennies and take a run at Fred Hoiberg.

Texas Tech is bumping Tubby to $2.8m. Bidding war. Memphis is going to have to pay 3m or better or look like they were not serious. Their message board is in full meltdown. Make some popcorn and check out MemphisTigers.org .
