Ga. Tech's Pastner won't hire assistants who golf

Newly hired Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner expects his assistant coaches to commit themselves to rebuilding the Yellow Jackets into a national power -- and that means they won't have time to golf.

Pastner, when asked recently about hiring assistant coaches, said that any potential candidate who likes to golf frequently "can't work for me."

"My first question to anyone I [might] hire is, 'Do you golf?'" Pastner told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "If they say, 'Yes,' you can't work for me, because that means five hours on a Sunday or on a Saturday. Can't. Don't want it. That's for my assistant coaches. Any of my assistant coaches, if they're golfers, not working for me."

What if they like to watch really long movies?

 

Better question should be "Do you cheat?"

 

The Georgia Tech basketball golf tournament fundraiser sounds like it's a no-go for this year.
I think Pastner's second question is, "Do you like to sleep? If the answer is 'Yes,' then sorry. You're out. Can't have you. That's five hours a day, man."

 

Pastner is an asshole who exemplifies everything wrong with college athletics. It's a fucking sport, sport. It's not life or death. Fuck you, Joshie.

I'm reminded of the football coach who liked his assistants to have hot wives, just for the family photos in the media guide.

 

Has he forgotten that golf is a way to schmooze boosters?

 

He's probably seen how much liking to golf has held back guys such as Roy Williams and Tom Izzo.

Jeff Eisenberg, whose work I respect, surprised me with his statements that UNLV is a better job than TT in the long run and that it may be a top-25 job nationally. Financial issues stemming from lack of football $ -- including need to fly commercial and the obvious fact that TT just paid Beard twice what UNLV would have -- are only part of the deal.
